Specimen Requirements

Doctor must call MDH tick-borne disease epidemiology staff at 651-201-5414 prior to submitting specimens for clinical consultation.

Specimen Type: Serum (preferred) and/or CSF

Specimen Volume: 1 mL (each)

Any specimen submitted for POWV testing will be tested for entire arboviral panel, IgM which includes:

Powassan virus (POWV)*

West Nile virus (WNV)*

La Crosse encephalitis (LAC)

St. Louis encephalitis (SLEV)

Western equine encephalitis (WEEV)

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEEV)

*Arboviral panel for CSF specimens only includes POWV and WNV

Refrigerated (preferred)/Frozen OK - if specimens already frozen, keep them frozen, do NOT thaw.
