Diagnosis and treatment of lipid disorders such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, and various liver and renal diseases.

Specimen Requirements

Collection Container/Tube:

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) gel tube.

Acceptable: Plain, red-top tube or a serum gel tube

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Pediatric (minimum) volume: 0.5 mL in a green top (lithium heparin) MICROTAINER gel tube

Reference Values

The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) has set the following guidelines (reference values) for LDLC:

Optimal: <100 mg/dL

Near Optimal: 100-129 mg/dL

Borderline high: 130-159 mg/dL

High: 160-189 mg/dL

Very high: ≥190 mg/dL

*if Triglycerides are >400 on a Lipid Profile, the calculated LDL will reflex to this direct LDL (test code LDLC).
