Useful For
D-dimer assay is useful as an aid in the diagnosis of thromboembolic events. Elevated concentrations of D-dimer are indicative of the presence of a clot and have been reported in DVT, PE, and DIC.
Specimen Requirements
Draw a full, light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube. For pediatric (minimum ) volume use the 1.8 mL tube. Allow tube to fill completely. Invert gently several times to mix blood. If collected offsite, please send frozen platelet-poor plasma.

Platelet Poor Plasma Instructions:
- Centrifuge the primary tube within four hours of draw
- Transfer plasma to an aliquot tube
- Centrifuge the aliquot tube
- Transfer plasma to a second aliquot tube
- Freeze the second aliquot tube
Rejection Criteria
- Specimens that are clotted
- Visible hemolysis
- Tube volume below minimum fill line (<90% expected fill) or above maximum fill line

Cutoff: 0.22 - 0.50 mg/L FEU
