Specimen Requirements

This test must be scheduled with Ridgeview Medical Center Laboratory before specimen is sent. Call Ridgeview Medical Center Laboratory at 952-442-2191, extension 36010 to schedule test. 

Testing is performed Mon. - Fri.  9AM to 2PM

Semen should be collected following at least a 48-hour abstinence period, but not more than 7 days.

Specimen must arrive within 1 hour of collection.

Collect entire specimen in a screw-capped, sterile, glass or plastic container. Forward promptly. Specimen must be kept warm (body temperature) during transport. Do not refrigerate or freeze.

Note:

1. Label container with patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, specimen source, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials
2. Complete and submit a Semen Specimen Collection form in Special Instructions with the specimen.
3. Patient must register for billing in Admitting, and bring registration information to Ridgeview Medical Center Laboratory.

ADDITIONAL TESTING IS AVAILABLE FOR LOW COUNTS (< 2 M/ml)

• Order LABSEMSC, Semen Analysis with Strict Morphology sent to MAYO
• Specimen must arrive within 24 hours of collection.
• Send specimen Monday through Thursday only and not the day before a holiday.   Not performed on weekends- no collections on Fridays.
• There is a special Mayo collection kit
• Specimens collected off-site must be at RMC within 45 min

Collection Instructions: Patient should have 2 to 7 days of sexual abstinence at the time of semen collection for accurate results.

Additional Information: Include the following information: semen volume, viscosity, pH, appearance (color), and number of days of sexual abstinence.
