Specimen Requirements
If possible, inform patients to stop taking Biotin (hair, nail) supplements 2-3 days before their lab draw.
Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum

Preferred: Green-top (lithium heparin) gel tube
Acceptable: Plain, red-top tube or SST
Specimen Volume: 2 mL
Pediatric (minimum) volume: 0.5 mL

Reference Values
0.465 - 4.68 mIU/L
Specimens with biotin concentrations up to 2 ng/mL demonstrated a less than or equal to 10% change in results. Biotin concentrations >2 ng/mL may falsely decrease TSH results.
For diagnostic purposes, the results should always be assessed in conjunction with the patient's medical history, clinical examination, and other findings.
