Useful For

Diagnosis and assess methemoglobinemia, a condition where there are elevated levels of methemoglobin in the blood.  Methemoglobin is a form of hemoglobin that cannot effectively carry oxygen, leading to reduced oxygen delivery to the body’s tissues.

Specimen Requirements

Draw a full, dark green-top (lithium heparin) tube. 
Allow tube to fill completely.
Do not uncap tube once specimen has been drawn. 
Tube should be transported directly to laboratory after collection.

 

Specimen Type: Whole Blood
Collection Container/Tube: Dark green-top (lithium heparin) tube
Acceptable Container: Lithium Heparin Syringe
Preferred Specimen Volume: Allow tube to fill completely
Minimum Specimen Volume: 0.25 mL Whole Blood
