Useful For
- For the detection of MRSA from anterior nare specimens.
- It is used in active surveillance programs to identify potential reservoirs in an attempt to control the transmission of MRSA.
Specimen Requirements
Collection Instructions:
- Tilt back and immobilize head.
- Open red-top, double swab BBL CultureSwab and moisten with a few drops of sterile saline.
- Gently insert swab into lower nasal passage and gently rotate. Repeat on other side. Do not insert swab too far into nasal passage. Patient should not feel the need to sneeze or tear. Inserting swab too far may cause epistaxis (nosebleed).
- Remove cap from transport tube and place swab in culture transport media.
- Label specimen with patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, date, specimen source, time of collection, and collector’s initials.
