Identifying a suspected imbalance in electrolytes or acid/base imbalance

Specimen Requirements

Special Note:  Spin down within 1 hour of draw.  Avoid hemolysis. Bicarbonate decreases approximately 4 mmol/L in an uncapped tube after 1 hour.  Label specimen aliquot appropriately as serum or plasma

 

Specimen Type: Plasma or Serum

Collection Container/Tube:

Preferred:  Green-top (lithium heparin) gel tube 

Acceptable:  Plain, red-top tube or SST

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Pediatric (minimum) volume: 0.5 mL
