Reference Values
LDL:
Pediatrics (< 20 years):
- < 109 mg/dL (desirable)
- 110 - 129 mg/dL (borderline high)
- > 129 mg/dL (high risk)
Adults:
- < 100 mg/dL (optimal [< 70 mg/dL if diabetes or coronary heart disease])
- 100 - 129 mg/dL (near optimal)
- 130 - 159 mg/dL (borderline high)
- > 159 mg/dL (high risk)
Non-HDL calculation:
- Desirable: < 130 mg/dL
- Near desirable: 130 - 159 mg/dL
- Borderline High: 160 - 189 mg/dL
- High: 190 - 219 mg/dL
- Very High: ≥ 220 mg/dL
The above reference ranges were set by the National Cholesterol Education Program
See individual test listings for other reference values.
Methodology
Profile Information: | |
Cholesterol | Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) |
High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) |
Triglycerides |
Non-HDL calculation |
If Triglycerides are >400, the calculated LDL will reflex to a direct LDL [LAB81].
Day(s) Test Set Up
Monday through Friday
Performing Laboratory
Ridgeview Medical Center Laboratory
Test Classification and CPT Coding

Equations
Calculated LDL:
Total cholesterol - HDL - (Triglyceride ⁄ 5 ) = LDL Cholesterol mg/dL
Calculated non-HDL:
Total Cholesterol mg/dL – HDL Cholesterol mg/dL = Non-HDL Cholesterol mg/dL
