Specimen Requirements

Container:     Plastic leak proof container

Collection:     Submit specimen in either of two ways

• Place brush immediately in a container with saline and shake vigorously to remove the cells.  If multiple specimens are obtained clearly mark the source of each specimen
• Smear material from brush directly on glass slides and immediately spray fix with cytology spray fixative.  Spread the material thinly and evenly on the slides.  Use frosted end slides with the patient's name and birth date written in pencil.
