Useful For

This test is used to detect bacterial overgrowth in the small bowel. Organism quantitation only. No identification or susceptibility testing done.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive in laboratory immediately after collection. Quantitation may change if specimen is not processed promptly, and this may result in a falsely elevated result.

  1. Collect small bowel aspirate or small bowel wash in sterile container.
  2. Label specimen with patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, specimen source, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials.
  3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note:  Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
