Specimen Requirements
Container:Needle rinse fluid should be submitted in a leak proof container with saline added
Slides should be submitted in plastic or cardboard carrier.
Collection: Slides should be smeared thinly and evenly. Spray fix immediately with Cytology spray fixative. If the slides are air dried write AD or “air dried” on the slide. In addition, slides should be labeled on the frosted end in pencil with the patient name and birth date.
Reference Values
Results will be reported as Unsatisfactory, Negative, Atypical, Suspicious, or Positive
Specimen Transport Temperature
Transport immediately to the laboratory. If not transported immediately to the laboratory; store in refrigerator
