Useful For
Screening for maternal colonization with Streptococcus agalactiae at 36 to 37 weeks gestation as a guide for intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to decrease the risk of infection by S agalactiae (group B streptococcus) in the infant.
Specimen Requirements
Collectiuon Instructions:
- Swab (red or blue-top Culturette), lower vagina (vaginal introitus), followed by rectum (insert swab through anal sphincter) using same swab or 2 different swabs. Cervical cultures are not recommended, and a speculum should not be used for collection.
- Place swab in culture transport media (red or blue-top Culturette), making sure specimen is in transport media.
- Label specimen with patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, specimen source, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials.
