Important Note

Clinic Specimen Requirements:

  • Notify Ridgeview Medical Center Laboratory of specimen.
  • Centrifuge within 1hr from the time of specimen collection.
  • Plasma should be double spun, removed from the cells, and frozen at -20°C
  • Date and time of collection should be recorded on transport tube.
  • Transport as soon as possible.
  • Frozen plasma samples must be rapidly thawed at 37°C while gently mixing. Mixing is critical before testing.
  • Testing should be performed within 8 hours of thawing.

Useful For

Monitoring the coagulation status of patients on Unfractionated Heparin therapy

Specimen Requirements

Draw a full, light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube. For pediatric (minimum ) volume use the 1.8 mL tube.  Allow tube to fill completely. Invert gently several times to mix blood.  If collected offsite, please send frozen platelet-poor plasma.

Platelet Poor Plasma Instructions:

  1. Centrifuge primary tube within 1 hour of draw
  2. Transfer plasma to an aliquot tube
  3. Centrifuge the aliquot tube
  4. Transfer plasma to a second aliquot tube
  5. Freeze the second aliquot tube

Rejection Criteria

  1. Grossly lipemic plasma
  2. Specimens that are clotted
  3. Tube volume below minimum fill line (<90% expected fill) or above maximum fill line
