Useful For
Monitoring the coagulation status of patients on Unfractionated Heparin therapy
Specimen Requirements
Draw a full, light blue-top (sodium citrate) tube. For pediatric (minimum ) volume use the 1.8 mL tube. Allow tube to fill completely. Invert gently several times to mix blood. If collected offsite, please send frozen platelet-poor plasma.

Platelet Poor Plasma Instructions:
- Centrifuge primary tube within 1 hour of draw
- Transfer plasma to an aliquot tube
- Centrifuge the aliquot tube
- Transfer plasma to a second aliquot tube
- Freeze the second aliquot tube
Rejection Criteria
- Grossly lipemic plasma
- Specimens that are clotted
- Tube volume below minimum fill line (<90% expected fill) or above maximum fill line
