Useful For

Measuring hemoglobin levels in perpheral blood.  Hemoglobin is the protein molecule in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Whole Blood

Container/Collection Tube: Dark Green Tube(no gel - sodium heparin) or Heparin Syringe

Preferred: Dark green-top (lithium heparin) tube or Heparin Syringe, NOT on ice

Acceptable: Dark green-top (lithium heparin) tube or Heparin Syringe, on ice

Specimen Volume: 1 mL

Minumim (Pedatric) Volume: 200 uL

 

Specimen Stability

 Maximum Stability: 30 minutes

  • Adult Males: 12.6-17.4
  • Adult Females: 11.7-16.1
