Useful For

Screening for maternal colonization with Streptococcus agalactiae at 36 to 37 weeks gestation as a guide for intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis to decrease the risk of infection by S agalactiae (group B streptococcus) in the infant

Specimen Requirements

Collectiuon Instructions:

  1. Swab (red or blue-top Culturette),  lower vagina (vaginal introitus), followed by rectum (insert swab through anal sphincter) using same swab or 2 different swabs. Cervical cultures are not recommended, and a speculum should not be used for collection.
  2. Place swab in culture transport media (red or blue-top Culturette), making sure specimen is in transport media.
  3. Label specimen with patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, specimen source, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials.
