Order Code USE CORTISOL STIM ORDER SET Cosyntropin (ACTH) Stimulation test

Important Note

This procedure must be scheduled with 2N as they need to administer the drug and monitor the patient.

Patient must be drawn for a baseline Cortisol and ACTH before Cosyntropin is administered.

Useful For

Assessing the adrenal glands' stress response by measuring the adrenal response to adrenocorticotropic hormone

Specimen Requirements

ACTH, Plasma

Specimen Type: EDTA Plasma
Container/Tube: Ice-cooled, lavender-top (EDTA) tube

Specimen Volume: 1 mL (minimum volume: 0.5 mL)

Collection Instructions:

  1. Blood is drawn for ACTH at 0 minutes (ACTH0) for baseline, then Cosyntropin is administered.
  2. Spin down in a refrigerated centrifuge and immediately separate plasma from cells.
  3. Send specimen frozen in plastic vial.

 

Cortisol, Serum 

Specimen Type: Serum

Collection container/Tube:

Preferred: SST

Acceptable: Plain, red-top tube

Specimen Volume: 2.0 mL

Collection Instructions:

  1. Blood is drawn for cortisol at 0 minutes (CORT0) for baseline, then Cosyntropin is administered.
  2. Blood is drawn for cortisol at 30 minutes (CORT30).
  3. Blood is drawn for cortisol at 60 minutes (CORT60).
  4. All specimens must be spun down promptly.
  5. Send specimens refrigerated in plastic vial.
