Useful For

Identifying the presence and type of crystals found in synovial fluids using polarized microscopy.
Testing for cell counts with differential, culture, and chemistry are not included in this analysis and must be ordered separately.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Synovial Fluid
Preferred Collection Container: Lavender (EDTA) Tube
Acceptable Collection Container: Dark Green Heparin Tube (no gel) or sterile container
Specimen Volume: Optimal 2 ml 
Minimum Specimen Volume: 0.5 ml

 

Label specimen with an EPIC label or with the patient’s name, date of birth or hospital medical record number, specimen source, date and time of collection, and collector’s initials.

Specimen Stability

Test specimen within 1 hour or refrigerate.
